POI HISTORY: Poi was originally used many years ago by the indigenous Maori people of Polynesia to increase their flexibility, strength, and coordination. Poi was also used as a form of entertainment and as a game by Maori women in New Zealand. To watch a Maori dancer perform with the poi is to be mesmerized by their skill and dexterity. It is said that in the old days only women of high rank knew how to dance the poi, and they jealously guarded this knowledge from the lower classes. To the Maori, POI means ball at the end of long rope. The original POI were made with flax leaves rolled into a ball.
POI TODAY: There is increasing interest in the art of Poi today. Poi swinging competitions are held throughout the world, and Poi has now found a new home in the nightclub as a visual art. Go beyond swinging glowsticks or flags and return to the original swinging art of POI!
ABOUT OUR POI SWINGS: Our Zuni Poi Swings are made of a durable ripstop nylon, and the elegant tails are designed to float nicely behind the weighted head of the Zuni- showing the orbits made by the poi and adding to the beauty of the activity. Features include an adjustable cord, an integrated swivel clip to attach glowsticks, a convenient carrying pouch, and an intructional pamphlet. The glowstick attachments (we recommend 6" glowsticks) add incredibly colorful orbits and are just amazing to watch in a club. The orange and yellow tail poi swing colors are florescent and black light sensitive and create astonishing trails of light without the need for glowsticks. Also available in a colorful blue tail or green tail.Poi swings are offered in two-tone combinations: yellow head/orange tail, orange head/yellow tail, blue head/green tail, or green head/blue tail. Select by TAIL color when choosing your color.
